Mr. Jahangir Khan Tareen

Jahangir Khan Tareen is a leading expert on agriculture, sustainable development, rural economy and agri-business. Recognizing his knowledge and skills, Government of the Punjab appointed him as Chairman of the Task Force on Agriculture Development in 1997. Under his dynamic leadership the task force played a landmark role in modernizing the management of major crops and achieving food autarky in Punjab.

After obtaining his Master in Business Administration from University of North Carolina, United States of America, Mr. Tareen worked in Department of Public Administration, University of Punjab, and later at Grind lays Bank, Lahore (1975-77) in the corporate banking division. Known for his entrepreneurial skills he bought 1500 acres of barren land in South Punjab at Lodhran from 1978 to 1997 and developed it into the most modern and state of the art cotton, wheat, mango and vegetable farm in the country.

Between 1981 and 1990, he spearheaded the turning around the Pepsi Cola bottlers in Multan and Lahore as Managing Director and Chairman of the Franchise. As Managing Director of JDW Sugar Mills Limited. Rahim Yar Khan, he has pioneered many farmer friendly initiatives in order to enhance productivity and profitability of both farmers and the sugar mills.

Mr. Tareen has panache for philanthropy and public service. He is on Board of Directors of numerous rural development and poverty alleviation organizations. He served as Member Board of Directors of National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) and Punjab Rural Support Programme (PRSP) established on the pattern of Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP), and was instrumental in bringing RSPs operations to South Punjab. He is Senior Advisor, on Natural Resource Management (NRM), to National Rural Support Programme and Punjab Rural Support Programme (PRSP).

Presently Director of Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund, an autonomous public company set up by the World Bank and Government of Pakistan to administer a $l00m World Bank Fund. PPAF has been instrumental in capacity building of a large number of civil society organizations, and not for profit bodies working for poverty alleviation in Pakistan. Lodhran Pilot Project (LLP) a personal commitment of Mr. Tareen, of which he is Chairman and sponsor, was set up in 1999, on the lines of renowned Orangi Pilot Project (OPP). The legendary Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan personally visited Lodhran on persuasion of Mr. Tareen, and launched the programme.

Mr. Shoaib Sultan Khan

As senior advisor, South Asia Poverty Alleviation Programme, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Shoaib Sultan Khan has undertaken since August 1994, setting up of demonstration pilots in the six countries of the SAARC region, on the pattern of the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP), a highly successful rural development programme, whose evolution has been overseen by Mr. Khan since its inception in December1982, which has been internationally recognized for its innovative and effective approach.

Mr. Khan obtained his Master of Arts degree in English from Lucknow University. He joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1955, and subsequently completed a Public Administration Course at the University of Cambridge. Mr. Khan has a Bachelor of Laws degree from Peshawar University, in addition to which he has also done academic work at Birmingham University and at Queen Elizabeth House, Oxford. .During the tenure with the Government, Mr. Khan served as Deputy Director of Civil Service Academy. Deputy Commissioner Kohat and Peshawar, Commissioner of Karachi Division: Secretary of Health, education and Social Welfare, Government of North West Frontier Province and Director of the Pakistan Academy of Rural Development.

Mr. Khan's career in rural development dates back to 1959 when he came in contact with Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan. On the pattern of Comilla Project, he established the Daudzai Pilot Project of the integrated Rural Development Programme in Pakistan in 1972. In 1978, he went to Nagoya, Japan, as a consultant to the United Nations Centre for Regional Development. Between 1979 and 1982, he worked in Sri Lanka as the UNICEF consultant on the Mahaweli Ganga Development Project.

Mr. Arif Hassan

Born in Delhi in 1943, Arif Hasan migrated with his parents to Karachi in 1947. He studied architecture at the Oxford Polytechnic, UK, from 1960 to 1965. worked in architects offices in UK, France and Spain, and return to Karachi in 1968 to establish his independent practice.

Arif Hasan is the architect of a number of important residential, commercial and educational facilities in Pakistan. He has been a consultant to various community action groups, NGOs, government institutions and international development agencies. The Orangi Pilot Project (OPP), to which he is principal consultant since 1982, has received an extensive international acclaim as a major urban upgrading project for a large squatter settlement of Karachi. From 1979 to 1989 he conducted the comprehensive Environmental Design Project at the Department of Architecture ad Planning (DAP) at the Dawood College, Karachi, and has been teaching there.

Arif Hasan's work has received several awards. He has been a member of the Steering Committee of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and is currently a member of its Master Jury. In December 2000 he received Prince Claus Award from the government of Netherlands, and on 23 March 2001 Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the highest civil award from the Government of Pakistan. He is also a member of the executive board of the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights, Bangkok, and Chairman of the Urban Resource Centre, Karachi.

Arif, Hasan writes regularly on housing and development for Pakistani and international journals. He is the author of several books on human settlements and ecology including Understanding Karachi, Planning and Reform for the Future, Housing for the Poor.

Dr. Rashid Bajwa

Dr. Rashid Bajwa obtained his bachelor of Medicine from King Edward Medical Collage, Lahorein 1981. also taught Human Anatomy and Embryology at the Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore. He was selected for Civil Service of Pakistan in 1986 through a nation wide competitive exam, he achieved 9th position all over Pakistan. Dr. Bajwa served as Assistant Commissioner, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Deputy Chief Planning & Development and Deputy Secretary etc. in Larkana, Gilgit and Lahore.
Dr. Bajwa's career in rural development start from 1993 when he came in contact with Mr. Shoaib Sultan Khan. He joined National Rural Support Programme (NRSP), established on the pattern of Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP), as Programme Officer and worked as SAP coordinator between Government and NRSP for one year (Mar 1993 - Mar 1994). He worked as Programme Manager, Social Sector Services, NRSP for seven months (Mar 1994 - Sep 1994) and subsequently completed his Master in Public Health (MPH) from Nuffield Institute for Health. University of Leeds. United Kingdom. Then he acted as Principal Staff Officer for six months (Oct 1995 - Mar 1996) in NRSP.
As Chief Executive Officer & General Manager, National Rural Support Programme (NRSP), Dr. Bajwa played a pivotal role in evolution of NRSP as the largest participatory programme in the country. In this capacity he is responsible for all financial and programmatic activities of NRSP in over 30 districts in Pakistan. He played leadership role in implementing number of mega-projects in partnership with UNDP, ADP, FAO, 1DB. LFL and SDC.

Dr. Bajwa has traveled extensively to North America, Europe, Central and South Asia and participated in leading Sustainable development initiatives. Apart from above mentioned responsibilities, he is playing active role in many international and national sustainable development assignments.

Miss Parveen Rehman

Miss Perveen Rahman did her Bachelor's in Architecture from Dawood College of Engineering and Technology (DCET), Karachi, in I982. After graduation she worked for a few months with an architectural consultancy firm. During this time she started working part time for the Orangi Pilot Project's OPP sanitation programme. In 1983 she joined OPP as an architect for its sanitation and housing programme. In 1986 she completed a six months post-graduate diploma course in housing. building and urban planning from the Institute of Housing Studies, Rotterdam.

Through her work, Perveen Rahman has extensive experience of working with community and government in the upgrading of low-income settlements. As part of her work, she has been involved in research, extension and training activities of the OPP and replication projects. Presently, as director of Orangi Pilot Project - Research & Training Institute (OPP-RTI). She is guiding the students/young professionals training programme addition directing Sanitation and housing programmes.

She has represented OPP-RTI at many national and  international seminars. Since 1983 she has been teaching as a visiting lecturer at the Architecture department of DCET. She is one of the founder members of the Young Professionals Training Programme Based at DCET and is also guiding the programme She is one of the founder members of the Urban Resource Centre. Karachi. and presently its treasurer. She is a member of the Board of Directors of National institute of Public Administration Karachi and a regular resource person in their training courses.

She was awarded the Mehdi Ali Mirza Award for the 1982 batch of the Department of Architecture. Dwaood College of Engineering & Technology. Karachi. She has received the 1986 Jaycees Award for community work. in 1997. she secured Faiz, Foundation Award for community research. Was given the National Building Research Institute award for her excellence in Housing Research. In 2001. She received the 2001 Rotary Club Award for vocational services, Apart from above mentioned responsibilities, she is playing active role in many international assignments.

Mr. Muhammad Hafeez Arain (late)

Muhammad Hafeez Arain, a close associate of Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan, was deputed by him as in-charge of LPP from Orangi Pilot Project (OPP).

He was born at Patiala (India) in 1944. He has no formal education but has learnt from experience and adversity. In 1960 he started his practical life as a political worker. In l972, along with other friends, he laid the foundations of the All Orangi United Federation (AOUF) in Karachi, which comprised of representatives from different local social organizations. Meanwhile, he was also involved in the creation of the Ration Merchant's Association 0 Ward Orangi. In 1978, he left politics and started to take an interest in social work. He was a political leader and social agitator in Orangi when he met with Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan, one of the greatest men of South Asia, in 1980. His association with Dr. Sahib changed him from a raw social agitator into a teacher of social mobilization and a proponent of participatory development. Dr. Sahib is his mentor and at every step he is guided by the memory of Dr. Sahib and frequently quotes his sayings and teachings.

Hafeez Arain joined OPP as an Assistant Social Organizer in 1980 and was soon promoted to become the Assistant Manager of the OPP's Low Cost Sanitation Programme. When the Sanitation Programme was expanded and was divided into two groups, he was appointed the team leader of one of the groups. He has also been Joint Director of the Orangi Charitable Trust (OCT) and when OCT was re-organized, he served as the Training and Extension Officer of OCT.

Lodhran Pilot Project (LPP) is certified by Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy (PCP) on September 28, 2010 to meet international NPO standards in the areas of Internal Governance, Financial Management and Programme Delivery.
